I pretty much love everything about the Doc from Hartnell to Smith but Tom Baker to me is the guy whose image and portrayal epitomizes and encapsulates the whole show.
That's right, MadMonk. Also you can't forget everything else that makes the Baker era(1974 - 1981) the best(besides Tom) and most memorable. The stories, characterization, and atmosphere. The modern series is terribly lacking in many areas in my opinion.
The new series have been a different programme. When we all watched the story unfolded and we all shared the journey. Now its Flash bang big noise lights and a monster 50 minutes done...buy the toys and go away.
The new series has nothing on the Tom era by any stretch of the imagination. it is primarily aimed at children and not the adults who grew up on the Tomness. It is filled with juvenile humor, at least the David Tennnat era seemed written that way, juvenile and one-joke villians and/or monsters. Immature acting all over the place. They even ruined the character of the Master!
