Hope you are well. Having played the famous detective both on TV and the stage (and you could say you were almost playing him in Talons of weng Chiang) I was wondering if you did much research into the character and if it's a character you are fond of. I've just been ploughing my way through the entire Conan Doyle Holmes stories and have enjoyed them immensley. Did you read any of them in preperation?
All the best,
P.S. thank you so much for continuing to answer these questions, it is still a huge thrill to hear your replies.

I was the first actor to play Holmes and Moriarty in the same play. It was not a success, no more than my effort at Hound of the Baskervilles. I have always thought of Holmes as essentially a comic figure. He is not a nice fellow. Watson saw the light and got married.
I thought Jeremy Brett was just wonderful - a real alien figure in his own little world. Doyle never mentioned whether Watson or Holmes coughed much.
