You gotta keep watching, as the show progresses and the Doctor starts to mellow and Ian and Barbara become seasoned travelers.
Yes, it's the 60's, so Barbara gets to be the damsel occasionally, but she's also the one that stands up to the Doctor the most and actually seems to think when they land somewhere new.
Especially like them in the Aztecs and the Romans.
The First Doctor's era has quickly become one of my favorites.
Partly because you can see them laying all the ground work for the next 40 years, but also because of the characters and that sense that these are a bunch of people going out into the unknown.

There's a tendency in later Who to treat the Doctor and co. as tourists, and in the Hartnel era you felt they were explorers.

If you're referring to the letter in the blue envelope, it would seem that he sent himself a letter but he was of a different time when he dispatched it.

Yes, it appeared that way but it might be a decoy in the storyline. Maybe someone else entirely sent those envelopes. Maybe another Time Lord perhaps? Only the shadow knows for sure, lol.

I haven't seen any of the current run, as I am a litle bit burned out by NuWho. What are they doing on there this season, Clara.

I see. Sounds most perplexing. They really should not write stories that intentionally confuse people who take the time to tune in and watch them. That is called being too clever.

I find it unneccesary to have convulted story arcs each season. They can do better if they write stand-alones, then anyone could just tune in and not have a hard time knowing what is going on.

Not having seen the new Matt Smith series, I can't speak about that, but all the others, I never found the previous story arcs convoluted or even overly intrusive to the series.

The one with Rose coming back did have those little Rose bits, which were uneven. Some worked, some felt really tacked on, but otherwise they've never been a problem.

Bad Wolf was very cool, 'You are not alone' was nicely done and I even liked the crack in time one.
