The Doctors of the old series were meant to be like mentors and grandfatherly-uncle characters who could be counted on to instruct the companions in how things really were in time and space. But then they made a habit of making the Doctor fallible, too fallible for his own good. But aside, I agree that even the great need to ask for help or face their fears at times. I am looking forward to Planet of the Spiders when it comes out on dvd here next week, as it features the Third Doctor facing the consequences for his ego and apparent arrogance. At the time, it was not a custom yet to have a Doctor who was regularly fallible. That was years away.
