What a surprise that instead of the usual title sequence of late, The Day of the Doctor is opened by the original title sequence followed by the few familiar events of the series’ very first episode with a policeman first to be seen here, just like it was the case for the first episode, the IM Foreman junkyard sign but not the junkyard itself and Coal Hill School. It seems that Coal Hill School has allowed the junkyard to advertise on their property since their previous appearances.
Coal Hill School is presented here as Clara is one of its teachers since we last saw her in The Name of The Doctor.
Osgood wears a scarf that looks similar to one worn by the Fourth Doctor, something I will come back to later on.
Osgood incidentally is a very delightful character thanks to the performance of Ingrid Oliver and wouldn't mind to see more of her in future.
Spectacular scene of the Time War including the TARDIS piloted by the War Doctor smashing a Dalek.
The War Doctor meets Rose Tyler but she is not exactly Rose Tyler. I had speculated that Billie Piper could come back to Doctor Who as someone other than Rose, the precedent of former companion actors coming back to the series as different characters having been established by Jacqueline Hill in Meglos.
Technically Billie Piper did just that with her appearance in The Day of the Doctor. The War Doctor is the only one who can see her and in the presence of 10 and 11 would briefly called her Bad Wolf girl no doubt to inform the other aforementioned Doctors especially 10 who the War Doctor had been seeing.
Thanks to Bad Wolf girl or more precise The Moment, the War Doctor tells 10 and 11 when they were all in the cell about their sonic screwdrivers all having the same software as they contemplate how they were going to get out of it. However this line seem such a waste when Clara just opened the unlocked cell door for them.
Malcolm from Planet of the Dead got a reference here while there is a picture of his colleague Captain Mogambo from that episode in the Black Archives.
The Tenth Doctor appears here sometime before his swansong in The End of Time with it finally depicting what actually went on between him and Elizabeth I as first revealed in The Shakespeare Code.
When the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors both used their sonic screwdrivers at the same time they find the result of what they are trying to do back to the way it was with the Tenth saying the polarity got confused. Confusing the polarity of the neutron flow, wonder if that have the same ring to it.
When the Eleventh said timey wimey, was absolutely astounded when the Tenth says to the War Doctor that he does not know where the Eleventh got that saying from!
Oh dear the Tenth got stuck in keeping a promise to marry Elizabeth all because he mistakenly believed the one he proposed to was a Zygon. No wonder she was so mad at him in The Shakespeare Code.
Kate takes Clara to the Black Archive and it had pictures on a board of past companions including one of Sara Kingdom and Mike Yates together. Knowing that they each been with a different Doctor there is no way to deduce how such a meeting between these two companions took place.
Kate mentioned Captain Jack's death before reiterating that it was one of his deaths. Such a reiteration had to be stated from the production standpoint since it isn't Moffat's place to determine the future of Jack and Torchwood.
Quite a shock on seeing the Kate who took Clara to the Black Archive was a Zygon. However on my second viewing of this episode I noticed when this substitution took place prior to the Black Archive.
Quite funny on when they saw the round things (roundels) in the War Doctor's TARDIS, that the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors saying that they did not know what they are!
On the Eleventh Doctor's TARDIS, the Tenth said that the Eleventh had redecorated but he (the Tenth) does not like it. Obviously this is an obvious take from the Second Doctor saying the same thing about the redecoration at UNIT HQ in The Five Doctors.
Having only been mentioned in Revenge of the Cybermen & the Zygons' introductory story Terror of the Zygons, the space-time telegraph finally makes an appearance here and I had absolutely no expectation of ever seeing it.
Wow what an entrance by the Doctors to the Black Archive.
The Cybermen gets to be represented here with a Cyber head in the Black Archive.
It's brilliant on the Doctors figuring a way to save Gallifrey from being destroyed in the Time War. In fact Moffat found a way to have all the Doctors involved in this with the use of clips of Doctors 1-9. Even incoming Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi gets in the act with a surprising cameo with his eyes and obviously in good time we will get to see what 12's attire is going to be.
The War, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors.
We witness The War Doctor regenerating as we finally get the sense of how the Ninth Doctor came about even though we don't actually see Chris Eccleston's face.
The Tenth Doctor on leaving says he does not want to go something he will be saying at least one more time.
The Eleventh Doctor then meets The Curator who curiously looks like an older version of the Fourth Doctor and what a wonderful cameo it was from Tom Baker. I am guessing the scarf that Osgood wore was an early indicator that he was going to be there.
Interesting to hear from The Curator on the actual name of the painting.
The Curator left it ambiguous about whether he is another version of the Doctor. "Who know?" says The Curator. Who knows indeed.
The Day of the Doctor ends with a dream in which the Eleventh Doctor and his all previous selves even including the War Doctor look upon Gallifrey.
A truly superb final scene on a thrilling experience that is The Day of the Doctor and it certainly made my day.
