Searching for Tom Baker narrated audio book- Johnny Tomorrow

Postby JimDiGritz on June 8th, 2010, 9:55 pm

Hi everyone,

I had a cassette audio book back in the early 1980's called (I think) Johnny Tomorow.

I can vaguely recollect that it was about a young boy who lived on the moon and had no friends so he used the stations artificial matter creator to make toys.

I used to love listening to this when I was a little boy, but I can't for the life of me remember the exact title...

I'm 99.9% sure Tom Baker narrated it.

Does this ring any bells??

dear jim -

this is all i could find so far. will see what else i can find later. have never heard of Our Mister TOM connected with either this series or story line. but that doesn't mean HE didn't do an audio reading of it. hope this helps jog your memory, and isn't sending you down the wrong path.

DC COMIC BOOK HERO - 173 issues

Tommy Tomorrow travels in his Planeteer spaceship and carries a variety of ray guns and weapons with him.

Tommy Tomorrow is the man who might have been Kamandi, if the great disaster had occurred. As it is, he did wind up in the bunker called Command-D. Here, after the death of his grandfather, Budy Blank ( OMAC ) he was found by General Horatio Tomorrow of the Space Planeteers.

At first, the boy was sent to an orphanage under a dome on an asteroid, but the lad's intelligence and aptitude for science impressed the general, who adopted him. Tommy attended Spaceport, the Planeteer's "West Point",, from which he graduated with honours and soon rose to the rank of colonel. After a while, he was teamed with Captain Brent Wood, who was his companion on numerous missions.

At first, the two mostly patrolled their own solar system, but as exploration fanned out to other systems, they spread out as well to bring law and order to these new worlds. Eventually, they volunteered for exploration themselves.

Tommy's career was a distinguished one and he was decorated many times over. His exploits became an example of what a perfect Planeteer is capable of, and his legend carried through until at least the 25th Century.

Wow thanks Pattie Anne,

Great find, though sadly I'm not convinced it is the same character/story.

This was definitely a kids story about a young boy, and I don't remember any of the Planeteer references.

I think it was a standalone story, he had lots of adventures getting the fabricating machine to make lots of different items (much like today's 3d printers).

Any more ideas are greatly appreciated!!!

OK. was hoping i hadn't sent you off on a tangent.

by the way, was thinking (i know, dangerous proposition) ...

did TOM read an entire book on HIS "The Book Tower" series - like levar burton did on "Reading Rainbow?"

if indeed TOM did read an entire book, someone could have taped HIS reading of it, as it went out over the airways. and you could have gotten an audio cassette copy that way. do you remember if your tape had a professional label on it?

sure wish they would. :|

BIGH SIGH

have never seen an entire episode. :(

just have bits and pieces of it, that i have collected from off The Web, and snippets of people's recollections from their on-line blogs. :P

oh yes, mr jim, have tried to find a LIST of the books TOM read for HIS 22 episodes of hosting, but so far, no one seems to have THAT. as THAT would either let us know we were on the right track, getting us closer to solving your 'QUEST',

"The Quest is the Quest."
Dr Who "Underworld"

or it would eliminate SEARCHING further throughout "The Book Tower."

"No, that's not it, nor that one ..."
Dr Who IV

You can strike this one of the list.

I have the commercially-released cassette of Johnny Tomorrow, and it's read by Jon Pertwee, not Tom Baker.

Hi there, I have a copy of Johnny Tomorrow on audio cassette. It's exactly as you described, and I also enjoyed listening to it. It was John Pertwee that narrated it though, not Tom.
