"All teeth and curls"

Hello Tom,

We've discussed artists' depictions of you in comic strips, but I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on your very distinctive appearance back in your Doctor Who days... How would you describe your younger self?

Many thanks!
Colin.

Colin,

Younger than Doctor Who? It was passed wrapped up in women's clothes. Not women's clothes exactly but clerical wear, a long black soutane down to my heels and a crisp white lacy surplice down to my knees. I was a slave at religious services every day, all the year round. I assisted at the sacrifice three times a day and once a week I crouched in a dark box where I confessed to crimes I had not committed. As you know to be a Christian is to sacrifice all privacy day or night, on holiday or at a football match. And with a guardian angel on my left shoulder who tutted if I as much as glanced towards a mirror, my youth flashed by without me ever having a clear picture of what I looked like. It's a melancholy tale, Colin, and I have hardly recovered yet. Which is why I became an actor; I had to do something to overcome my almost invisible insignificance.

Are you still there?

If so, best wishes from Tom
