Monarch of the Glen

Dear Tom,

I'm leaving tobacco chat aside for this month.

I did think that Monarch was a wonderful show but started to fail after Richard Briers left. You completely rejuvenated it - I thought that there was quite a lot of mileage in your character which the other characters could have been written around. Question: Were you always in it for a limited period because it was doomed anyway, or would you have been happy to carry on?

Best as always,

PS Stayed in that nearby Lodge recently, with all the photos of Briers et al up on the wall. No operative central heating initially which became no surprise when I broke into the outhouse (nae sonic screwdriver just manual) only to find that the boiler and electrics were protected from a rather large hole in the roof by means of a carefully perched umbrella!

It was running out of steam a bit. I enjoyed the first stretch but I got tired. I didn't think it was funny or crazy enough. I also thought I was wasted. But the people were nice and the country amazing.
