So I made a Fourth Doctor account on a site.

Postby SakuradaKaoru on April 21st, 2010, 9:16 pm

I would have posted this in the Doctor Who section, but this isn't really about the show.

Any tips on getting into and staying in character?
Only three questions I can think to ask Tom... and I can't ask one because it's Doctor Who related and the other two aren't about his private life but might still be personal.

I'm not sure I understand the question.

Is it acting advice you are refering to?

Welcome aboard by the way!

Yes, the Fourth Doctor isn't very easy for me to imitate so I was hoping that Tom Baker fans could give me some tips.

I gather from your posts that you have created an account on a different website and used the screen name, or called yourself, "Fourth Doctor". If this is the case and you want to imitate that role I'd suggest you first, if you haven't already, familiarize yourself with every episode that was made. At least then any references that you make will be accurate. As far as staying "in character" that is a bit more difficult. Tom has said on many occasions that he wasn't acting when he was in the role. He wasn't the doctor but instead the doctor became him. It worked marvelously! Since there is no way to "get into his head" as it were, you can only try to be similar. I'd say be nice unless you need to be nasty, never panic or over react, and always know the answer even if you don't. Don't forget to have fun with every situation.

Dear SakuradaKaoru -

And always, always cultivate a razor sharp sense of surprise. No, not by walking backwards, not that sense of surprise. But by genuinely reacting to each situation, even if it is the same old hat, like it was all brand new.

Best,
