I very recently heard a song called, Dragostea Din Tei. The rough translation has to do with love in the linden tree. Known also as the Numa Numa song. Numa Numa apparently means something like, you don't, you don't take me. I can't get it out of my head. I had never even heard of the band. They no longer exist as a group. The three performers are from Moldova which is in between the Ukraine and Romania. They have also recorded the song in English, Russian, Dutch and Italian, that I know of. A strange but catchy tune.

Does anybody know that Tom recorded his own version of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me"?

Where do I start? Let's see....

Classic Rock
Traditional Heavy Metal (and it's various sub-genres such as Power, Doom, Speed/Thrash, NWOBHM)
Hard Rock (primarily of the vintage variety)
Psychedelic and Acid Rock
Outlaw Country(late 60's, 70's and 80's)
Soft Rock/Easy Listening (mostly 70's and early 80's)
Progressive Rock
New Wave
Punk Rock (real Punk Rock, not pop-punk)
Alt-Rock
Blues
Jazz
Classical
Pop (mostly late 60's to mid 80's. As long as it has substance that is)
Synth Pop (late 70's, early 80's)
Reggae
Retro Rock or Metal (if it's good)
Comedy music (Weird Al, etc...)

A friend once told me The Kinks were supposed to be responsible for inventing heavy metal. Does anyone have any opinions on which group were the original pioneers of that genre of music?

I can't see the connection between the Kinks and heavy metal myself.

I'm guessing it most likely came out the punk movement and the hard rock of the late 70's. Guys like the Ramones.

By the way;
Tom is a liker of Elvis Presley. Does anyone on here know anything of the early pop stars of the 50's, e.g. Cliff Richard & The Shadows, Bill Haley & The Comets, Chuck Berry, Andy Williams, Matt Munro, Shirley Bassey or anyone else?

I would say that Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Black Sabbath were very influential in what developed into heavy metal. You could say that 'You Really Got Me' had perhaps the most aggressive, overdriven guitar riff of the time, but that was about it in terms of heavy metal influence!

As for punk, in the UK, at least, the thing that people now call 'punk' did not start off quite how many imagine. It was a group of oddballs, misfits, and freaks trying to forge some kind of identity. They had as much in common with Joe Orton, Oscar Wilde, and Quentin Crisp as any musical influence.
